_*Boekehuis Bookshop*_ is closing forever on Saturday 28 January 2012.

Boekehuis Bookshop was more than a business venture. It was a project "arguing for the continuation of public culture and public intellectual life".

Corina van der Spoel now says, below, while announcing the closure, that "The life of ideas and letters continues regardless".

As true as this no doubt is, yet one wants to ask, in that case, why did this bookshop have to close?

Its closure means one less institutional participant in the "life of ideas and letters" and in "public culture".

Two of the possible answers are:

     * Books are not the main medium that people are using any more.

       /and/or:/

     * Boekehuis was not oriented towards the actual "public
intellectual life" of the country, which is not your Mark
Gevissers and your Anton Harbers any more, or your Black
Consciousness crowd or PAC, or Adam Habib, but is young, gifted,
       black, and *_communist_*.

Asikhulume!

Dear Friends of BOEKEHUIS

BOEKEHUIS wishes you health, happiness and lots of reading time for 2012!

It is with sadness that I have to announce that BOEKEHUIS Bookshop will be finally closing its doors on

Saturday 28 January 2012. It has been decided by its owner, Media24 that the shop will close down.

We have received so many encouraging messages and phone calls supporting and expressing appreciation for the project that was BOEKEHUIS, too many to thank each individually. Thank you for demonstrating your solidarity with everything BOEKEHUIS stands for so eloquently. It has been very heartening, both personally and, more importantly, in terms of arguing for the continuation of public culture and public intellectual life.Do know your voice has not been a solitary one but that the friends of BOEKEHUIS form a network from Joburg to Cape Town, Paris, London, Berlin, Amsterdam and further afield.

It has been wonderful to be part of this bookshop project. The life of ideas and letters continues regardless.

May your reading journey be interesting and inspiring!

With very best wishes and thanks,

*Corina van der Spoel
& the BOEKEHUIS team: Leandri, Bettie, and Eunice*
