Mama Florence passed away yesterday in her home province of Mpumalanga after a long battle with illness. This brings to three the number of ANC MPs who have passed on in the last few days. We are utterly devastated and shattered by these heartbreaking developments. Mama Florence became a member of parliament in the National Assembly in 2004, and participated in various parliamentary portfolio committees, including in safety & security and justice & constitutional development. She was committed to women's issues, and through her longstanding membership of the ANC Women's League, passionately campaigned for the rights of women, gender equality and rights of children. The ANC's pro-women policies we have today, such as on 50/50 gender representation, is credited to the relentless campaigns and struggles spearheaded by women revolutionaries of the quality of Mama Florence. She was active in the Women's League for many years and played key roles within its structures, including as regional chairperson, provincial executive committee member, and provincial coordinator in Mpumalanga. She was a true servant of the people, a people's person who was always found amongst the community she served. We dip our revolutionary banner in memory of her selfless sacrifice and service.
