Below is our statement as agreed in our telephone conversation
SASCO Gauteng pledges Solidarity with the Wits 17 We condemn the unfair dismissal of the Wits 17, a group of workers who were dismissed without written warnings by a catering company called Royal Mnandi Solutions. These workers were dismissed for merely refusing to move to other dining halls outside of campus due to lack of consultation and the additional financial burden they will incur as a result of relocation. SASCO Gauteng extends its unconditional support to the boycott campaign by the SASCO branch together with our alliance structures at Wits against all Royal Mnandi operated dining halls. We want to salute the 875 students who cancelled their meals yesterday at Jubilee and the main dining hall in solidarity with the dismissed workers. Their heroic action resulted in approximately R27 563 loss of profit yesterday for this unscrupulous catering company. We vow to increase our fight against the privatisation of the so called 'non-core services' by University managers in our campuses because we have borne the brunt of privatised residences and cafeterias which do nothing but make it impossible for poor and working class students to access essential services due to their exorbitant prices. We call upon all Wits students to reject this bullying by cancelling their meals in all Royal Mnandi dining halls in solidarity with the Wits 17 and in defence of the hard-won rights of these vulnerable workers and their children.
