Subject: [YCLSA Discussion] ANC Women’s League - Prepared for ANC Policy
Conference

ANC Women's League

*ANC Women’s League Statement, 25 June 2012*

*ANC Women’s League Prepared for ANC Policy Conference*

/Excited to Participate/

The ANCWL would like to wish the ANC well on the eve of the liberation
movement’s 4^th National Policy Conference.

The Women’s League not only feels privileged to form part of a process
that can shape the future of our country for generations to come, but it
is also excited at the possibilities that lie in the hands of delegates
for the further emancipation of women, which will form part of the
Women’s League agenda, if not the main focus, going into the conference.

Not only does the WL’s own contribution the gender policy have the
potential to better the lives of women through the many different
aspects the document touches on, including women and health, justice,
safety, rural development and very importantly economic development. The
WL is committed to deal decisively with patriarchy wherever it threatens
to raise its ugly head across all the discussion documents.

The League believes that patriarchy is a major contributing factor for
many of the social ills that exist in our society including gender based
violence as well as a lack of participation by women in the economy and
the stifling of women rights.

Women form the larger part of the population and therefore should be
playing a greater role in the economy, so the WL will be dealing with
the economic transformation discussion document with a clear mandate to
promote the economic development of women, especially rural women.

Women need to be a priority in economic development in order to destroy
the face of poverty in the country. Due to the dire economic situation
many rural women find themselves in, they are often trapped in
situations of abuse and cannot leave as they will have no means to
support their families. Poverty and gender-based violence therefore in
many instances go hand in hand and this is one of the issues that need
to be addressed by the policy conference.

The ANCWL acknowledges with great pride that the ANC has done a lot to
transform the society we live in today. However a lot still needs to be
done. We believe the social transformation can help further this cause.
This goes back to poverty and it is women who suffer the most under the
constraints of poverty.

The ANCWL noted that there seems to be a decline in the morals, values
and ethics of society and ways of restoring these need to be discussed
to enhance the society we live in.

The WL held a special policy workshop along with women from alliance
structures to prepare women for this conference and come up with a clear
focus. The WL also held a special NEC on Monday to further prepare and
organise its delegates. The ANCWL realises the importance of developing
quality policies to further the total emancipation of women and fight
the social ills that exist in our society.

With that spirit of bettering the lives of South African women the ANCWL
is prepared and eager to participate fully in this week’s ANC policy
conference.
