YCLSA Welcomes announcement by NSFAS to launch Central Applications Office

The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] welcomes the announcement
by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to roll out the Central
Applications Office by the year 2013/2014 that we have been calling for as a
solution against the increased financial exclusion of working class students
from accessing higher education.

We still continue our call to say the Central Applications Office (CAO) should
be responsible for academic and financial applications and allocation of
students to institutions of higher education; this call goes also for further
education and training to remove the obstacles posed by institutional autonomy.

The NSFAS CAO will go a long way in reducing the misappropriation and
maladministration of funds meant to assist underprivileged students who seek
access to higher and further education and training by removing the third
parties in allocation decision making of such allocated funds.

On Matric Examinations

We would like to wish all matriculants success in their preliminary
examinations as they prepare for the upcoming final matriculation exams at the
end of the year. We encourage all stakeholders i.e. parents, educators,
learners and members of the community to contribute in ensuring matriculants
are prepared and they have all the necessary support despite whatever outcomes.

We further call on the Education Department to permanently discontinue the
publication of matriculation results. The publication of such has not
benefitted anyone especially learners who find themselves in unnecessary
pressure of being in the papers and this causes them great distress which also
makes them lose focus on their studies and examinations. The rate of suicides
due to non-appearance of learners in papers must be enough a reason for this
discontinuance, as some are erroneously left out and end up being part of the
statistics due to such.

We further call on the Basic Education department to ensure all provinces
fulfil their mandate in terms of delivery of learner support materials in time
for the next year and the culture of learning and teaching becomes the order of
the day in our country as part of committing to meet our developmental
objectives. Education remains a basic right for the society we live in to curb
the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment.
