YCLSA Gert Sibande District Joe Slovo Right to Learn Campaign 2013 The Young Communist League of South Africa (Ufasimba) in Gert Sibande District (Mpumalanga) will be launching its annual Joe Slovo Right to Learn Campaign on Wednesday 09 January at Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary in Embalenhle (Govan Mbeki Municipality). This annual campaign, named after the late General Secretary of the SACP and Chief of Staff of MK, seeks to highlight and remove social and economic barriers towards free, quality and compulsory education. This year's campaign builds on a successful campaign which highlighted the ills associated with taverns operating in close vicinity and drug peddling in schools in Sakhile Township. As part of the campaign a march was held wherein a memorandum of demands was delivered by the YCLSA National Secretary, Buti Manamela, to the office of Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe. The efforts of the campaign resulted in the closure of ten illegal taverns in Sakhile and a subsequent improvement in the culture of teaching and learning. The 2012 National Senior Certificate results show that all the schools in the township increased their performance from the previous year, from an average of 65% to 69%. The YCLSA wishes to highlight the achievements of Khulasakhile Secondary, one the schools which had been worst affected by the drug and alcohol abuse,which improved its pass rate from 26% to 66%. This year's campaign which will be undertaken jointly with our allies in education ,the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and South African Students Congress (SASCO), will be aimed at exposing the systematic exploitation of working class students. Our collective energies will be directed towards School Governing Bodies and Principals who seek to undermine the gains made by the Minister of Basic Education by insisting to compel working class parents to pay unreasonable "administration" or "registration" fees in schools which have been declared no as fee schools. Such a practice is unjustifiable and we will be asking all parents to boycott paying any of these fees, which often cannot be accounted for. Our effort will also be directed towards exposing and reporting unregistered private education providers who prey on the vulnerability of working class men and women. These criminal syndicates are responding to the ever growing number of young people who see the need skill themselves in order to enter labour market. Consequently, we encourage young people to see Further Education and Training Colleges as The Post Schooling option of choice. Education is a right, not a privilege.
