*Sadtu calling for D-G's head*** *Pertunia Ratsatsi, Sowetan, Johannesburg, 13 February 2013*ABOUT 300 members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union yesterday picketed outside the department of basic education in Pretoria calling for the removal of the director-general.
The Sadtu members claimed the department has been going downhill since Bobby Soobrayan came into office in 2009.
Sadtu general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said Soobrayan has only signed two collective agreements in four years and neither of them were implemented.
"We are here to demand that teachers who marked matric papers be paid retroactively from 2009 to 2012 as per the agreement we have signed. We demand that the rural allowance be reinstated," Maluleke said.
"We are saying to the minister enough is enough. How long will you keep Bobby here?"
Maluleke said the picket was only the beginning of their mass action which they will keep up until Soobrayan goes.
Maluleke said they will also not allow education to be declared an essential service, an idea mooted by the ANC.
