*Education ‘in denial’* *Zodidi Mhlana, The New Age, Johannesburg, 13 February 2013* It appears the Limpopo textbooks fiasco is far from over.After the DA and later Cope earlier this week slammed Basic Education’s claim that the delivery was successful, the SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) says it has evidence that nearly 200 schools in Limpopo are without textbooks and stationary two months into the school year.
“Almost 192 schools in Limpopo have not received enough textbooks and the majority affected are secondary schools. They must stop blaming principals for this. We cannot be fooled by the department, which manufactures lies about the delivery of books,” Sadtu’s secretary-general, *Mugwena Maluleke* said.
Basic Education department reprimanded the DA for claiming that more than 50 schools in the province were yet to receive books, giving the party until Friday to issue an apology.
But, Maluleke said the department was in “denial” about the textbook shortages in Limpopo because it was defending its director-general, Bobby Soobrayan.
Soobrayan was fingered by the presidential task team set up last year following the late delivery of books to grades 1, 2, 3 and 10 pupils in Limpopo on time, which recommended that he should be probed for his role in the fiasco by the Public Service Commission.
Sadtu’s members picketed outside the department’s offices on Tuesday, accusing Soobrayan of “undermining collective bargaining” by ignoring an agreement to increase rates for markers.
