*NEHAWU mourns the death of Phyllis Naidoo*

NEHAWU is extremely saddened to hear of the passing away of Phyllis Naidoo, a true communist and tireless working class heroine. Phyllis Naidoo was working class champion, who learned to oppose all forms of discrimination and developed a revolutionary consciousness at an early age.

While a student at Natal University; she organised a Human Rights Committee at the University to help raise funds for the Treason Trialists and their families. In 1958, she married MD Naidoo, a committed member of the SACP, and in 1961 she, herself joined the SACP. She worked with struggle stalwarts like Dorothy Nyembe, Florence Mkhize and Moses Kotane to challenge the Bantu Education Act, because they believed that it had lowered the standard of education for Africans, since Std 10 had been reduced to Std 6.

She and her husband helped fellow activists to get out of the country. She personally took Moses Mabhida and two other comrades to Newcastle when they were making their way out of South Africa. For her political activities she was subsequently placed under house arrest in 1967, while her husband was imprisoned on Robben Island. She qualified as a lawyer and went on to defend struggle activists including Harry Gwala.

She was a fearless champion of equality and justice who went on to employ ex-Robben Island detainees after their release from prison. We owe it to heroines like Phyllis Naidoo to continue to fight for the full emancipation of the previously oppressed majority from the triple crisis of poverty, unemployment and inequality. South Africa might have lost Phyllis Naidoo but the nation has not forgotten her sacrifices and her dedication to the principles of equality and justice.

We salute this struggle icon and may her soul rest in peace.
