YCLSA press statement on the death of Margaret Thatcher

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] has noted the death of
former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

As tributes stream in from around the world including from the United States
who said : “The world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and
liberty”, we feel that we must set the record straight.

Thatcher’s policies that made her famous and the darling of private capital the
world over were privatisation, liberalising the market, greed and inequality.

To glorify ‘Thatcherism’ is to view the assault on the working class as a noble
goal. She was determined to keep money in the hands of the rich at the expense
of the poor with her infamous “poll tax” and her insistence on scrapping free
milk for school children.

As South Africans, we were on the receiving end of her brutal foreign policy in
which she refused to implement sanctions against South Africa and thus disable
the apartheid regime. She viewed the African National Congress (ANC) as
terrorists and sought at all times to ensure the continuity of white minority
rule at the expense of black lives. As evidenced by her friendship with the
ruthless dictator, Augusto Pinochet, the suppression of Irish resistance and
her invasion of the Falklands, she viewed human rights and franchise as
trifling matters.

We send our condolences to her many victims. The working class of Britain,
still suffering from her aggressive privatisation, South Africans who could
have been freed of apartheid tyranny almost a decade earlier, and the working
class who remain slaves to capital worldwide.

Thatcher famously said: “whoever thinks that the ANC can rule South Africa is
living in cloud-cuckoo-land”.

The ANC is now approaching 20 years of democratic governance with achievements
including building a stronger African continent and Global South. Her lauded
free market policies have proven to be in crisis the world over with banks and
corporations requiring state assistance to function.

The greatest legacy Thatcher has left us is the proof that despite all odds,
the working class, majority will always triumph.
