*Unisa unions call for a ‘decent’ wage increase*** *Karl Gernetzky, Business Day, Johannesburg, 17 April 2013*ACADEMIC and support staff trade unions at the University of South Africa (Unisa) have demanded that university management return to bargaining over wage increases.
The unions said they were also concerned about budget transparency at Unisa. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Unions (Nehawu) downed tools at South Africa’s largest tertiary institution’s campuses nationally on Tuesday. Union leaders presented management with a memorandum of demands, calling for a "decent" wage increase, an end to labour broking and openness over resources.
But Unisa said on Tuesday the institution’s operations had not been affected.
Wage negotiations at Unisa have deadlocked. Both Nehawu and the Academic and Professional Staff Association (Apsa) are demanding an across the board 11.7% increase, while the university has offered 5.6%.
Nehawu called the offer "insulting" and demanded that the R70m budgeted for labour brokers this year be used to supplement salary increases.
Unisa spokesman Martin Ramotshela said on Tuesday that the institution’s management would study the memorandum of demands ahead of a return to bargaining, which Unisa was committed to.
Apsa chairman Nic Coetzee said the union had not yet seen the Nehawu memorandum but would largely support it in the interest of breaking the "gridlock" over negotiations and because of shared concerns.
Both Apsa and Nehawu wanted more consultation in Unisa’s budgeting process. There was no intention to stop teaching before Unisa management returned to bargaining with a "review" of its position.
