The South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) has taken time to reflect on the vicious, barbaric and criminal conduct of employees of CB Stores -- Jane Furse, Limpopo, in their assault and humiliation of Esther Mankge. We are convinced that the employees in question, who for reasons best known to themselves decided they had a God-given right to assault people whom they suspect or accuse of wrong-doing must be brought to book.
Ester Mankge was viciously assaulted with an assortment of weapons (belt, stick and mallet hammer), and despite her request for water, protestation of innocence, insisting to be taken to the police as well as the heart-rending screams, the blood thirsty employees would just not let up.
Apart from the beatings she endured at the hands of two male bullies (one of whom openly agrees to be a religious person), she was also humiliated by way of being undressed to expose her underwear and private part and further assaulted on the private parts. More disgusting and distasteful is the laughter and sneer comments from a female colleague, who seem to be enjoying the humiliation of another woman and in fact urging the so-called men on. She even demands that the men lift Esther's dress higher and "e tla re e bone" (let us see it) and "mmetse ka hamola" (hit her with the hammer) while the other man can be heard saying: "Ge o kgona o rote" (piss yourself if you must).
We are utterly dismayed that a conduct of this nature could happen unnoticed in a shop, despite a lot of movement, particularly by senior staff members, with no one at least hearing the cries and noise emanating from the beating room. We are convinced that management is equally guilty of permitting and to a fair degree abetting this criminal conduct and should be brought to book. It is not enough for management to all of a sudden claim that the perpetrators are suspended and will attend disciplinary proceedings, which seems to be a move designed to absolve management from any responsibility or liability.
No single person has a right to assault another, no matter what crime the other might have committed. This is why we have the criminal justice system. CB Stores employees can also not claim the right to be accusers, prosecutors, judges and executioners and must be made to pay!
We therefore demand that the full might of law be visited upon the employees who assaulted and/or encouraged the assault and humiliation of Esther. We further demand that management of CB Stores also face the might of the law for their role and failure to protect Esther as a customer, possibly because they also assumed she was guilty of theft. That the perpetrators have been an almost insignificant bail is also cause for serious concern and a too regular occurrence resulting in the justice system being questioned with the citizens losing confidence. We hope this area will be addressed by the powers-that-be with a little more consideration of the victim, the crime and general conduct of the perpetrators.
We also demand that CB Stores should financially compensate Ester for the past, present and future pain, suffering humiliation caused to her and her family not only arising from the beating but also of the entire ordeal being in the public domain. The pain and suffering she and her family has and will continue suffering cannot be described and join the many people who condemn this act and offer support to Esther and her family.
