*Buses streaming in for Sadtu march* *Michael Appel, The New Age, 24 April 2013*More buses are starting to arrive in Marabastad, Pretoria where some 15 000 protesting members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) are expected to march to the Union Buildings.
A parallel march is also being staged in Cape Town where it is expected a further 10 000 marchers will gather.
Sadtu are staging protest marches across the country calling for the resignation of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and her director-general, Bobby Soobrayan after Motshekga withdrew from an agreement which would have increased the tariffs paid to matric markers. The department withdrew from a 2011 agreement after tariffs which were agreed upon differed from those gazetted.
Sadtu members have been on a go-slow since about Easter, fulfilling only essential tasks. The Department of Basic Education has warned that today's protest action is "unlawful" and that the no-work-no-pay principle will be applied.
The march in Pretoria was scheduled to start at 10am but transport issues have delayed many members. In Cape Town, marchers will assemble at 10.30am in Keizergracht Street and move down Darling Street, Adderley Street, Spin Street and Plein Street towards Parliament.
