SACP BRIAN BUNTING STATEMENT ON THE N2 PROTEST BY KANANA RESIDENTS IN
CAPE TOWN-FOR AN IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The SACP in the Brian Bunting district has noted the protest
that took place on Monday 20th May 2013 on the N2 in Cape Town. In
our view as the SACP, the vanguard of the working class, the protest presents
two realities. The first reality is the fact that the DA led City of Cape Town
and the province both has failed to provide basic services including
eradication of the bucket system despite false claims to the contrary. For the
record the SACP vehemently objects the introduction of this portable flushing
toilet
system as announced by the DA administration recently. Our people in Cape Town
also deserve the same
services that are enjoyed by Hellen Zille. The poor deserve sustainable
dignified ablution facilities in proper houses instead of communal toilets. If
Patricia De Lille cannot use a portable
flushing system as her sanitation our people equally cannot use it and we are
making no apology!
Secondly, the protest presents the
community rejection of the outsourcing of basic services such as sanitation as
wrong and unacceptable. It is in this context that as the SACP we would like to
call upon the City of Cape Town to take over the delivery of basic services or
to put t simple, outsourcing and agentification of municipal services must come
into an end in the City of Cape Town.
The SACP would like to remind the
nation that it was this same City of Cape Town that dedicated a big chunk of
its 2012/2013 budget to the affluent areas than the working class communities.
Recently, the mayor of Cape Town
Patricia De Lille was awarded as a Mayor of the month whilst our people still
live without sanitation, clean drinking water and shelter. That award was just
one of the electioneering campaigns because it is not informed by the reality
on the ground.
The SACP will intensify its
campaign for provision of access to basic services by the poorest of the poor
including the community of Kanana. We will continue with our demands to advance
the basic human rights and dignity of the poor in Cape Town. Indeed, the
frustrations by the residents of Kanana are genuine because non-collection
buckets for two months is extremely dehuminising.
