*YCLSA Gert Sibande District Press Statement*

*YCLSA angered by senseless rape and murder of its member*

The Young Communist League of South Africa [Ufasimba] in Gert Sibande
District has learnt with great shock and anger of the barbaric rape and
murder of its member Cde Hlengiwe Cebekhulu. Cde Hlengiwe was murdered and
raped on Monday morning when a yet unknown, cowardice, attacker broke into
her room as she prepared to go to school.

Cde Hlengiwe Cebekhulu [16], who had recently joined the YCLSA, was a
learner at Machu High School, in Balfour. In the short period of time she
had developed a keen interest in the political work of the YCLSA and had
shown great potential.

We wish to extend our condolences to Hlengiwe’s family, close friends and
schoolmates in this time of need. They can take comfort in the wisdom
contained in the isiZulu saying which says “Ukufa kuthatha fumuka, kufa
kuthatha silaza”.

Cde Hlengiwe's grotesque rape and murder forms part of series of murders
which have received wide media coverage and have made the blood of South
Africans curdle. While all these murders and rapes are one too many; Cde
Hlengiwe's makes it all the more difficult for us to contain our rage as we
continue fight a faceless enemy.

As the YCLSA we believe that these unacceptably high numbers of cases of
sexual violence against women and children are symptomatic of the breakdown
of social integration owing to physical and spiritual alienation of the
working class from their communities.

The combination of our violence past, racial-gender-class inequality,
general despondency owing to a lack of opportunities for gainful
employment, fatherless or even child headed homes are all drives to the
structural social breakdown which has breed men who have become social
delinquents.

We society are harvesting the fruits of our unique brand of colonialism. No
amount of policing and prayer will deal with this scourge. Only the
reversal the tyranny of an inherently violent system of capitalism will
suffice.

The YCLSA calls for the South African Police Service to speed the up the
process of investigating and finding suspects for prosecution. We call on
our members and the Balfour community to desist from seeking vigilante
justice and allow the police to embark on the process of investigation and
supply any information that may lead to the arrest and capture of the
culprit.
