*African National Congress, 4 June 2013*** *ANC calls on Marikana to identify and isolate thugs*The African National Congress calls upon its members and structures in the Bojanala Region, as well as community members in Marikana and surrounding areas to work with the South African Police Services (SAPS) to identify and isolate the thugs responsible for the violence we have seen in that area over the last couple of weeks.
The criminal activities we have seen in Marikana, regardless of motivation, must be condemned across all sectors of society including by government, the private sector, organised labour and ordinary community members.
There is no justification for any loss of life in Marikana as South Africa has a solid, progressive and effective labour relations regime, which amongst others, provides for the resolution of disputes amongst any parties and including between parties.
The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa enshrines the fundamental rights to freedom of association and fair labour practices. These rights must be extended to and defended by all South Africans; no one can claim to be a leader where they fail to understand these very basic principles instead resort to violence to exert hegemony.
The ANC calls upon the SAPS to ensure continuous and visible presence in Marikana until lasting calm is returned to the area.
The South African Police Service must act decisively to halt this scourge of violence and leave no stone unturned in bringing perpetrators to book.
