*Government should take greater responsibility in scholar transport*

As, the South African Communist Party in the Eastern Cape Province we find comments attributed to Ncedo Kumbaca on behalf ofthe Department of Transport published in the Daily Dispatch on 12 June 2013; quite reckless and insensitive in face of the challenges facing the scholar transport in the province.

It is a monumental blunder for the Department of Transport to say it cannot involve itself and characterize this bad situation as "palace politics " as it is millions of rands of the taxpayer's money that are injected into the scholar transport whilst there are disturbing corruption and fraud allegations.

These statements by the Department of Transport are indicative of gross insensitivity towards the poor people of this Province who rely largely on government to transport their children to school. These reckless and insensitive comments are made by the Department of Transport just after the province has once more lost five (05) school kids as the result of another accident. It cannot be that Government would not want to intervene when there are recurring deaths of pupils, alleged corruption and so many irregularities.

The perpetuating unfortunate situation in the scholar transport quite disheartening; young people of this province continue to die in the roads whilst tenderpreneurs are fighting in the full glance of the Department of Transport. This kind of situation desires decisive leadership from our government not the wholesale denialist approach.

It is in this context that as the SACP we wish to raise our deepest concern for the deafening quietness of the Office of the Premier given the current crisis that has reached disastrous proportion after we have made a call for the office of the premier to intervene.

The Department of Transport cannot wish to distance itself from its responsibilities to ensure that there is quality scholar transport provided to the children of Eastern Cape. It is the role of our government to intervene on behalf of the people.

We reiterate our call for the Department of Transport to get to bottom of this and ensure that there are no more lives lost in this program due to negligence and corruption. Our government must work tirelessly to combat the existing corruption network between some corrupt government officials and greedy tenderpreneurs.

We are calling upon the Office of the Premier to intervene in these challenges facing the scholar transport and bring all those who might be found guilty of fraud and corruption to the full might of the law.
