*YCLSA stands against the abuse of refugees *

As the Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] we believe that
the working class should unite, we have always, and will continue to,
condemn xenophobia and attacks targeted against immigrant and refugees.

Last night in Kraaifontien, on the eve of world refugee day, we received
reports of dozens of refugee-owned shops and Spazas being looted by
criminal elements who masquerade behind the banner of xenophobia in
dishonest attempts to justify their unacceptable looting of small
informal traders.

We cannot allow for such behaviour to go unchallenged. We condemn the
attacks and call upon the police to increase their presence to avoid the
situation from spiralling further out of control. These looters have
seriously disgraced us and we must call on South Africans to publicly show
their disapproval, we cannot allow small criminal groups to tarnish our
good nation's efforts to provide protection to refugees.

While South Africa is a country with many problems, we are also a country
that has not only a moral, but a historic responsibility to protect
and assist our fellow African brothers and sisters who have to flee their
countries and thus be classified as refugees.

The YCLSA hopes that the bad actions of a few do not discredit the
overwhelming compassion, love, support and spirit of ubuntu that the vast
majority of our people have towards refugees.
