WFTU Youth Secretariat Message of Support : SASCO National Free Education March
Our presence here is informed by the understanding of the dialectical link between the struggles of the workers and students. These strata of the working class are the motive forces that stand to benefit from the success of the consistent Socialist-orientated revolution. We are here because we identify with the legitimate, valid and genuine demand of free, quality education. Indeed, the democratic government has a responsibility to ensure that this demand is realized. Our education must be free to facilitate universal accessibility by the working class students. Education cannot be a commodified product that is left to the barbarism of the markets. Education cannot be sold to those who can afford, and be denied to the overwhelming working class students. Education is not a privilege for the few, it is an inherent basic human right of society at large. Our education must be free of capitalist values that promote competitive, necrophyllic conduct in the so-called dog-eat-dog world. Our education must engender socialist values that promote values of solidarity, humility, sacrifice and selfless service to humanity. Our education must promote a society that is based on the clarion call of the working class that says "an injury to one, is an injury to all", instead of the bourgeoisie ideology that says "an injury to one, is an opportunity to all"!!! Our education must not produce capitalist apologists that live a life of conspicuous consumption, crass materialism and empty selfishness. Our education must promote the development of grounded, organic working class intellectuals in the mould of Chris Hani, Amilcar Cabral, Thomas Sankara, Frantz Fanon and Paulo Freire. In our annual International Action Day, October 3, we have prioritized the De-commodification of education and the availability of textbooks and all essential learner-teacher material required for the realization of quality education!!! This year, we will continue to advance this demand across the world!!! As WFTU Youth Secretariat, we encourage all of you to interact with the African Youth Charter as we link our demands with the broader struggles of young people. In closing, once again we want to eloquently state that your struggles are valid, legitimate and genuine. More than anything, Paulo Freire instructs us to do away with the banking-type education, and, as revolutionaries we must embrace libertarian, class conscious education!!! AMANDLA!!!
