Statement of the ANC Women's League, 15 August 2013

Conferring of the Freedom of the City of Johannesburg on Cde Sophie Williams
De Bruyn

The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) welcomes the conferring
of the Freedom of the City of Johannesburg on a veteran of the women's
struggles, Imbokodo and ANCWL National Executive Committee member, Comrade
Sophie Williams De Bruyn.

Together with Comrades Lillian Ngoyi, Raheema Moosa and Helen Joseph,
Comrade Sophie De Bruyn helped to organize the more than 20,000 women of all
races, who participated in the historic march against the pass laws in 1956.
It is these women and their heroism that our country continues to
commemorate annually on the 9th August. The ANCWL therefore regards and
appreciates the Freedom of the City bestowed upon Comrade Sophie as an
honour conferred to celebrate, broadly, the role women from all walks of
life have played in ushering in of our democratic dispensation.

As we mark 100 years of women's struggles for liberation from all forms of
oppression, the ANCWL remains committed to pursuing the objectives of gender
equality and a truly non-sexist society. Indeed, South Africa is a better
place for women today than it was in 1994 however much more still remains to
be done. To ensure that tomorrow is better than today, the ANCWL welcomes
the partnership with government in recognizing the role and struggles of
women and calls for even greater cooperation with all social partners in the
quest for the total emancipation of women.
