Lecture for Nana Abrahams and Rocky Mafikeng

 

 

The African National Congress Women's League will host a Memorial Lecture on
the legacy and work of Comrades Nana Abrahams and Rocky Mafikeng. 

 

The memorial lecture, which is a build up to the National Women's March to
be held on Friday 30 August in the Western Cape, will be addressed by ANC
NEC member Comrade Lynne Brown.

 

Member of the media are invited to the Lecture which will take place as
follows:

.        Venue: Thusong Centre, Paarl East

 

 

NOTES 

 

Comrade Nanna Abrahams, who passed away in December 2008, was a stalwart of
our struggle who dedicated her life to the fight against injustice and
exploitation; particularly amongst the working class and the rural masses in
the Western Cape. Born in the Paarl Valley of the Western Cape, Comrade
Nanna Abrahams who led as, amongst others roles, as General Secretary of the
Food and Canning Workers Union (FCWU) in 1956, subsequently serving in the
Food and Allied Workers Union. Comrade Abrahams served as a Member of
Parliament in the first democratic government and has received a number of
awards for her contributions in the liberation movement and her activities
on behalf of the working class.

 

Comrade Rocky Mafikeng was born in 1918 in the town of Tarkastad in the
Eastern Cape. She moved to the Paarl Valley in 1927. Having dedicated her
life to the struggle of the working class, she served as amongst others
President of the African Food and Canning Workers Union between 1954 and
1959. She joined the African National Congress and in 1957 became the Deputy
President of the African National Congress Women's League. Comrade Rocky
Mafikeng was a founder member of the Federation of South African Women
(FEDSAW).
