The Walter Sisulu University Strike is Over

NEHAWU has cancelled the six weeks strike by its members at the Walter
Sisulu University (WSU) following an agreement yesterday evening {05
September ,2013} that will see the workers receive a 5% annual increase
backdated to the 1st January 2013.

The parties agreed that labour will produce draft guidelines for the
migration of staff into the new university structure for management
consideration. Contract workers appointed against permanent posts will be
absorbed into the new structure should those position continue to exist.

On academic promotions the parties agreed to start a process that will
review the academic promotion policy immediately after the finalization of
this agreement. Study subsidy policy will also be reviewed as soon as
possible. Workers also accepted the presentation of the master plan by the
employer and the promise for regular updates on the plans to improve
teaching and infrastructure.

An audit firm will be appointed to conduct a further audit on the process of
migration into new WSU salary scales and any error that will be found with
the initial process, will be corrected retrospectively.

It was also agreed that a once off opportunity to migrate to a preferred
retirement fund will be accorded to members of staff and that presentations
will be done to enable staff to make an informed choice.

On housing allowance there was an agreement that all parties refer the
clause dealing with the housing allowance in the 2010 agreement to an
independent person for interpretation. An independent person will therefore
provide an advisory award on the aforesaid clause which the parties should
use to finalise housing allowance for all staff at WSU.

Workers are all expected to return to work on Monday 09 September 2013 and
the classes will resume the same day as per the agreed revised university
calendar. All involved parties agreed that all staff members will
participate in the revised university calendar without exception.
