Food and Agricultural Workers Union, 7 October 2013 FAWU Members to Hand over Memorandum to SA Breweries, Newlands Masses of FAWU members, employed by the beer division of SAB Newlands, will stage a march tomorrow, 8 October 2014 starting at 10h00 at SAB Breweries (corner of Main and Letterstead),from where they will proceed into Claremont Boulevard into Warthorn Road down the Main Road to Boundary Road where a memorandum of demands will be delivered to the Newlands office of SAB. Our members will picket on the sidewalk at the South African Breweries. The workers embarked on strike action on the 30th September 2013 and are now in their second week of a protected strike in demand of a nine percentage wage increase across the board. The employer is offering a "conditional" 7 percent currently and has shown no inclination that they wish to move or review. SAB is a global giant making money out of selling alcohol, a social evil which negatively affects our communities and can at the very least afford to give workers a nine percent wage increase. Interestingly, the company has found it necessary to resort to dirty tactics by offering bribe money to workers who return to work for an extra R 500 per day for each day the strike continues. FAWU is in possession of sms's sent to workers by management to lure them into abandoning the strike and accept extra cash in addition to their monthly salaries. It is interesting that SAB suddenly found money to offer to workers should they abandon the strike. They have just confirmed to us that they are indeed able to give workers a decent increase if they have "bribe" money to waste. Despite their public utterances, FAWU knows that the company will be negatively affected the longer workers stay away as they normally start to produce for the peak season at this time. They simply cannot reach their festive season targets with most of their employees outside. FAWU urges SAB management to reconsider their offer of a conditional 7% of which 4.2% is an actual increase across the board and 2.8% to discretionary performance regulated pay(PRP).
