Fishing Sector Bargaining Conference

(14th and 15th November 2013)

The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) is holding the National Fishing
Sector Bargaining Conference on the 14th and 15th November in Cape Town at
the Reitz Hotel at Cnr Main and Camberwell Roads.

The conference will be addressed by the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of
the big four fishing companies/groups and by the Ministers of Labour (DoL),
Minister Mildred Oliphant, and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF),
Minister Tina Joemat-Peterson on the 15th November 2013 at 12h00.

On the 14th November 2013 the expected 110 shop stewards at the conference
will be addressed by the General Secretary, Katishi Masemola, and thereafter
the conference will discuss the key objective of continuing the campaign for
the establishment of the National Fishing Sector Bargaining Council (BC) in
2014 to cover the 15 000 workers, from sea-going and fish-farms to
processing and distribution.

The conference will further discuss ways and means of strengthening the
on-going program of getting each and every fishing company to directly
employ workers from labour brokers and do away with this barbaric practice
of super-exploitative tri-angular employment arrangements.

In conclusion, FAWU will be declaring dispute with those companies resisting
to be part of the envisaged bargaining dispensation and waging strike action
to force them into the new bargaining arrangement. This will start in
February 2014 and continue until the entire fishing value-chain is part of
the bargaining council.
