Vavi suspension invalid - judge

Staff Reporter, iAfrica, Johannesburg, 4 April 2014

COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi's supension has been declared
invalid by the Johannesburg High Court.

Judge Phineas Mojapela found that while the trade federation was authorised
to suspend Vavi, the body's Central Executive Committee failed to adhere to
its constitution and did not vote on the matter.

Judge Mojapela thus ruled that the suspension was invalid and set it aside.

COSATU spokesperson Patrick Craven said that the trade federation would
respect the court's decision and discuss the ruling at its Central Executive
Committee next week.

Vavi was suspended after admitting to having an affair with a junior COSATU
employee.

He was not in court for the ruling.
