ANC Statement, 18 September 2014 Presidential Local Government Summit The African National Congress pledges its support for the Presidential Local Government Summit taking place today, 18 September 2014. The summit which is intended to deliberate on an urgent and action oriented plan to strengthen local government is line with President Jacob Zuma's emphasis in the 2014 State of the Nation Address that Local Government must be at the coalface of improving people's lives and creating conditions for inclusive economic growth and job creation. The summit will be attended, amongst others, by Mayors, Speakers, Chief Whips, Municipal Managers and Chief Financial Officers from South Africa's 278 municipalities. As the ANC, the leading public representative of South Africans with unmatched experience, capacity and political determination, we express our support to the unwavering summit believing it reaffirms our commitment to working together with our people to address local government challenges and move South Africa further forward towards the achievement of the vision encapsulated in the Freedom Charter. This summit, amongst the other platforms, carries our hope for determined, focused, radical, bold and decisive interventions to strengthen delivery and the confidence of the masses of our people in local government.
