SADTU Statement, 23 September 2014 SADTU'S 8th National Congress The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) will be holding its 8th National Congress from 2 - 5 October, 2014 at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Benoni under the theme: "Restore the Character of SADTU as a Union of Revolutionary Professionals, Agents of Change and Champions of People's Education for People's Power in Pursuit of Socialism." Close to 1 500 delegates - leaders of the ANC, SACP and COSATU Alliance, guests from government, business, international teacher union representatives are expected to attend the Congress. The National Congress is the supreme governing body of the Union and shall meet, at least, once in four years. It consists of National Office Bearers, Provincial Office Bearers, Regional Chairpersons and Secretaries and one branch delegate per 350 members. The National Congress will adopt policies by means of resolutions in furtherance of the aims and objectives of the Union and elects new office bearers. The Congress will assess its progress towards reaching its 2030 Vision and the implementation of resolutions since the last congress held in 2010. The Congress shall also focus on the following key issues: - Early Childhood Development; - The current examinations regime; - Conditions of service; - Post provisioning; - School leadership; - Recruitment and retention strategy for teachers and education employees. The media are invited and welcome to attend and report on the Congress on the opening and closing day of this four day event.
