NUMSA news out today

COSATU's Vavi will also 'make an important announcement' if the labour union
is expelled

Luyolo Mkentane, The New Age, Johannesburg, 7 November 2014

NUMSA'S fate will be sealed today at a special meeting of COSATU's top brass
expected to vote for its expulsion from the trade union federation.

But NUMSA general secretary Irvin Jim warned of a "very long unending
battle" should they be kicked out, saying they would not go down without a
fight.

This after the National Union of Metalworkers of SA's attempts to interdict
the central executive committee (CEC) meeting failed at the South Gauteng
High Court in Johannesburg yesterday.

Meanwhile, COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi is set to make an
important announcement today.

When The New Age asked him what he would do if NUMSA was expelled, Vavi said
only: "I will make that announcement (on Friday)."

NUMSA has claimed today's meeting would be used to implement "a pre-emptive
decision" to expel it from COSATU, and prepare ground for Vavi's removal
from his powerful position.

"Already we have been found guilty without having had an opportunity to
raise our case. NUMSA won't get fair treatment (at the CEC)," Jim said,
adding they would return to court should they be expelled.

The largest affiliate of COSATU is facing five key charges from COSATU which
include, but are not limited to, its call for COSATU to break ties with the
ANC-led tripartite alliance; its decisions to extend its scope by recruiting
members in sectors where other COSATU unions organise and to cease payment
of the political fund.

COSATU president Sdumo Dlamini said he was happy about the court's decision
because there was no urgency in NUMSA's application.

He appealed to NUMSA to attend the CEC as they would be given an opportunity
to "explain whether or not they should be suspended or expelled for
violating the COSATU constitution".

Jim said they would attend the CEC to "workshop" the COSATU top brass about
NUMSA's national congress resolutions.

"NUMSA is challenging the neo-liberal agenda that the ANC is implementing.
That's the only reason NUMSA will be expelled," he said.

The National Education Health and Allied Workers' Union on Monday called for
NUMSA to be "surgically removed" from COSATU. The ANC formed a task team led
by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to try and heal divisions in the 2.2
million membership COSATU ahead of the crucial local government elections in
2016.

Jim said: "The ANC report singles out NUMSA and Vavi, basically throwing us
out to the wolves who must deal with us there (at the CEC)."

ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said they would not comment.
