NUM Press Statement, 11 December 2014 Post-Extended-NEC Statement The National Union of Mineworkers Extended National Executive Committee breakaway was held at Mount Grace Hotel in Magaliesberg. The breakaway gathering comprised of the NEC members, Regional Coordinators from the NUM eleven regions, Pillar Heads, Youth Forum and Women Structure representatives who met from the 9th to11th of December 2014. The NEC made an overview of the three sectors which is mining, energy and construction with a special focus on Collective Bargaining and other industrial relations issues. It resolved on the following pronouncements: 1. Eskom matters We have made a call that Eskom Board must be removed or fired before the end of the year. It is this board which focuses on infighting instead of dealing with the electricity crisis. 2. Collective Bargaining The NEC has noted progress in the preparations for the Collective Bargaining of 2015. NUM members are busy finalizing to submit their expectations. We will be convening a Collective Bargaining Conference in February 2015 3. Criminal Cases, violence and intimidation We urge the Justice Department to accelerate the prosecution of the killers of more than 22 NUM members mainly killed in the Platinum belt. 4. Support the campaign against violence on women and children We urge the mining companies to create a conducive environment for women to work safe without fear and intimidation. Real men do not rape, hit or abuse women and children. 5. Mining companies The NEC has observed a trend whereby some mining companies wants to weaken NUM by taking away some of the achievements such as seconding union leaders to service members at all times. The mining companies are also refusing to grant time off to elected leaders to attend union activities. 6. Unity call at COSATU The NEC further calls for, and appeals for, maximum unity of COSATU affiliates in order to fight for our class with doubled energies. The NEC further calls for COSATU to engage other federations with the sole purpose of forming one federation, for as per our standing slogan: One Union, One industry, One Federation, One Country. To all members of the NUM, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. We hope you can all celebrate with your beloved family, relatives, friends and that you all have a fantastic, great, relaxing and cool holidays. Please do not drink and drive.
