SADTU Press Statement, 16 January 2015 Kenya and Swaziland SADTU supports the teachers of Kenya on their fight for decent living conditions and fair salaries and calls on the Mswati regime to provide quality free public education for all learners in Swaziland, and put an end to child labour. Kenya The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) is fully behind the toiling teachers of Kenya in their fight for decent living conditions and fair salaries in the country and supports their action to stay out of work until a satisfactory collective bargaining agreement is reached. It is reported that "Since 1997, teachers' salaries have not been reviewed, while the cost of living has been constantly going up," highlighted KNUT Executive Officer Lucy N. Barimbui. SADTU calls on the African Union (AU) to engage the Kenyan government to ensure that it quickly resolves this matter such that working class children in Kenya are not unnecessarily denied education. AU should also urge all African States to prioritise the working conditions, and salaries of teachers as they are central to provision of Quality Public Education. Swaziland SADTU calls on the Mswati regime to provide quality free public education for all learners in Swaziland and put an end to child labour. The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) is shocked by reports that King Mswati III has ordered the schools which were meant to reopen on the 20 January to remain closed and to reopen on the 27 January until his fields are weeded. This latest action by the Mswati regime is a serious violation tantamount to denying learners their inalienable right to education and it promotes child labour. The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) calls on Southern African Development Community (SADC) to ensure that Swaziland abides by all international conventions on education and child labour. It must recognise that education of working class children should never be compromised. SADTU is fully behind its sister union in Swaziland (Swaziland National Association of Teachers/ SNAT) in their ongoing struggle to ensure better working environment and conditions of service for teachers in the country. SADTU further supports other progressive formations engaged in fighting for democracy in Swaziland.
