Selebi's Condition was Tough on his Wife - Friend Mia Lindeque, Eye Witness News, Johannesburg, 24 January 2015 Jackie Selebi's longtime friend Welile Nhlapo says the former police commissioner's health condition has been tough on his wife, Anne, who was also nursing him at home. Selebi died at the Netcare Jacaranda Hospital in Pretoria yesterday morning at the age of 64. He had reportedly suffered from diabetes and had kidney problems. In 2008, he resigned as the head of Interpol and national police commissioner after he was charged with corruption. Nhlapo says it is a tough time, but Selebi's wife is a strong woman. "Anne is a nurse. She's been looking after him. She understands what's going on and what has been happening. But death is death, she's shocked like everybody else, but she's strong." Nhlapo says Anne has been receiving a lot of support. "I think the overwhelming support that she's been getting in terms of messages and the people who've been coming to the house have given her more strength." Tributes have been pouring in since yesterday. The African Nation Congress (ANC) has praised Selebi for his contribution to the struggle. The South African Communist Party (SACP) has also paid tribute to the former top cop. The organisation says it will always remember the role he played in the struggle and post-1994.
