South African Communist Party, 31 March 2015 Statement on COSATU The South African Communist Party (SACP) respects the primary position of the Congress of South African Trade Unions' (COSATU's) independence and bona fides, and believes that the federation has the capacity to overcome its own internal problems without any external interference. As the SACP we reiterate our call to the workers to build maximum unity and rally behind a single programme under the leadership of COSATU. The SACP notes with concern, however, that COSATU has for a while now been faced with serious problems of maintaining unity, cohesion and discipline. The latest divisive developments facing the federation are undesirable, and cannot be a cause for celebration for any progressive or revolutionary organisation. The challenges facing COSATU under the continuously changing conditions require hard work to build maximum unity anchored on intensifying connection to, and rooted in the day to day struggles of the workers. As the SACP we will continue to work together with COSATU both in solidarity and in alliance to strengthen our efforts in building maximum working class unity. In order for unity to succeed, workers need to combat competition among themselves and their unions and prioritise solidarity. Workers should recognise the dangers inherent in the development of the cult of personality and the undermining of the fundamental principles of internal democracy, collective leadership, discipline and self-discipline, constructive criticism and self-criticism. It is also important for the working class to guard against the dangers of business unionism and ensure proper and transparent accountability on matters relating to finances of their trade unions.
