SAMWU saddened by the shooting of a Metrobus Driver

The South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) has learnt with shock and
sadness the shooting of a Metrobus driver in the early hours of this
morning.

The bus driver, Mr Selelo Marwala was shot at by criminals, who pretended to
be passengers on Ontdekkers road around 5.30am. Mr Marwala was shot for
being courageous and defending his passengers who were being robbed of their
valuables by these criminals.

We have learnt that the Mr Marwala was taken to hospital and is currently
undergoing surgery as a result of the shooting.

We wish the Mr Marwala a speedy recovery along with a passenger who was also
shot at.

This incident is an indication of the high levels of crime in the country
and the extent to which criminals would go to, having no respect to human
live.

This further shows that the working class is exposed to criminals.

Our people wake up very early in the morning to ensure that they are at work
on time at the risk of criminals taking advantage of them.

Metrobus drivers are subjected to long working hours with unsafe working
conditions.

It is saddening that in the midst of such working conditions, the employers
do not see a need to properly remunerate workers.

Workers are victimised by Metrobus management while the employer continually
refuses to recognise duly elected Shopstewards.

We urge Metrobus management to ensure the safety of their employees, more
especially those who perform their duties in the wee hours of the morning.

We further encourage anyone who has information to approach their nearest
police station so that these animals face the full might of the law.
