COSATU to visit all provinces for wage consultations Steven Tau, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 8 April 2015 Trade union federation COSATU's leaders are currently visiting the country's nine provinces seeking a mandate from their members employed in the public service sector. This comes after the employer - the government - declared a dispute in the public service sector wage negotiations days before the Easter holidays. Speaking on behalf of the COSATU public service unions, Nkosinathi Mabhida said some of the provinces to be visited today, include KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. JMC4.jpg The COSATU Bloc Asked what the general response has been from the members on the grounded whom union leaders have engaged regarding the latest developments on the wage talks, Mabhida said many, particulary policed union, Popcru members have made it clear that they are not comfortable with the employer's offer of just under 5%. Labour is demanding a wage increase of 10%, and that the housing allowance be increased from R900 R1 900. "At the moment, there are no talks going on as we are awaiting the appointment of an independent mediator, and this process will take a couple of weeks," Mabhida said. Representing the Independent Labour Caucus (ICL), Basil Manuel said they have already met their members, who have expressed unhappiness over the latest offer at the wage talks. "People are really getting impatient and concerned as no one wants these talks to go the ugly route which is strike action. "As union leaders, we will be meeting with our members again this week to discuss the way forward," he said. Manuel said they were also waiting for a mediator's appointment at the wage talks. An industrial action could see schooling and health facilities being disrupted due to teachers and nurses downing tools.
