The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has launched the first
of six principal seminars around the country to tackle the issue of school
based violence.

On Thursday, over 200 Gauteng school principals and district officers
gathered at the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein for a seminar to propose
solutions to the matter.

The union says an immediate intervention is needed.

Speaking against the recent surge of xenophobic attacks, SADTU's provincial
chairperson for Gauteng, Eddie Kekana says the seminar could not have come
at a better time.

Kekana says attacks are a disservice to the country's image and integrity.

"We need to really educate our people, especially the young people, who are
being used in these particular acts of attacks on foreign nationals. Our
miseries and frustrations are not brought about by foreign nationals but by
the capitalist system we are entrapped in."

Although most schools have devised their own interventions, the union says
it hopes to come up with a national toolkit that will assist principals to
monitor violence in all its forms.

General Secretary, Mugwena Maluleke says one of the main areas of focus will
be to deal with the psycho social aspect.

"One of the areas that we need to have interventions on is psycho-social
because it's very important because we need to counsel children."

Several other seminars are expected to be held across the country.
