Media Statement, 18 April 2015

SADTU condemns attacks on foreign nationals

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) condemns, in the
strongest terms, the violent attacks on foreign nationals in our beloved
South Africa.

The Union is appalled by the unprecedented levels of hooliganism, killings
and criminality that have been unleashed upon innocent foreign nationals,
led mostly by the young people of our country.

These attacks have caused untold damage to South Africa - a country that
values human rights, peace and solidarity.

We are fully aware of the economic hardships faced by the majority of our
people, however, such behaviour can never be a justification for such
barbaric acts. Our miseries and frustrations are not brought about by
foreign nationals but by the capitalist system we are in.

We are part and parcel of the African continent and the South African
Development Community.

Africa and the international community played a pivotal role towards our
attaining of a new South Africa.

We therefore reiterate our call for the compulsory teaching of relevant
history in our schools so that the current and future generations should
know where we come from and our intrinsic link to the continent.

Let the youth of our country embrace education. Education is the site of
struggle, the struggle against poverty, unemployment and inequality.
Education should unlock the potential of the youth to participate in
economic activity of our country in the future and not to resort to wanton
destruction.
