NUM Press Statement, 19 April 2015

NUM support UJ's firm stand against Xenophobia

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) fully support the University of
Johannesburg (UJ) for taking a firm stand against the scourge of
xenophobia currently gripping much of our nation

The UJ community, students, and employees will tomorrow gather for a UJ
Convocation and March Against Xenophobia on Monday, 20 April 2015.

The event will start at the Sanlam Auditorium on the APK campus at 12h00.

As the NUM, we feel that it is very important that all South Africans must
show solidarity with international students and the wider international
community in South Africa.

The NUM still strongly condemns the anti-working class attacks on innocent
immigrants in Durban and throughout the country.

Many members of the NUM come from neighbouring countries such as Lesotho,
Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland, and others. We, therefore, cannot allow
the situation to be polarized further.

It is totally unacceptable and inexcusable that immigrants could be attacked
for being immigrants in a country which purports to support human rights.

The working class and the poor should be united against the common enemy i.e
oppressive regimes and capitalist exploitation. We cannot wage war against
each other. Workers of the world should unite and therefore we must
discourage this malady.

The NUM calls on the state to urgently intervene in the deteriorating and
escalating levels of xenophobic attacks in the country.

It is very worrying that these xenophobic attacks are characterized by high
levels of criminality and hooliganism and, therefore, calls for the state to
take strong action against these criminals and hooligans.
