SATAWU Welcomes Appointment of Siyabonga Gama as Acting CEO of Transnet

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) welcomes the
appointment of Siyabonga Gama as acting group chief executive, replacing
Brian Molefe who has gone to head up Eskom.

As the biggest union organising in Transnet we see this move as a step in
the right direction towards transformation in Transnet.

As one of the longest-serving member of Transnet's executive team Gama is
well known to SATAWU as management who is accessible. We hope his position
will open more channels of engagement.

Since Transnet is one of the largest the better performing parastatals in
South Africa, we hope that Gama will be at the forefront of transformation.
As this appointment will go a long way into the transformation of the
transport industry which has remained unchanged. May Gama's success breed
further success and be the pioneer of future changes in the organisation.

Majority of our companies in South Africa are still purely profit-oriented
and not concerned about social transformation. We want to remind Transnet
that state-owned companies can make a meaningful contribution towards
cushioning the country against the worst effects of an economic crisis by
expanding their infrastructure and embarking on transformative programmes to
create jobs.

SATAWU believes Transnet must start treating the unions as their partners in
bringing about real transformation, rather than as obstacles in the way of
commercialisation.
