UPDATE: Public servants march to the Treasury offices Steven Tau, The Citizen, Johannesburg, 23 April 2015 Hundreds of disgruntled public servants have already started converging on the old Putco bus company depot in Marabastad, Pretoria. "Down with 5.8 per cent and yes to a double digit", is what thousands of public servants are chanting about in the Pretoria CBD. Members of SADTU, NEHAWU, DENOSA and POPCRU have arrived outside the offices of Treasury. They will be proceeding to the department of Public Service and Administration. Public servants are demanding a 10 per cent wage increase while the employer is offering 5.8 per cent. Schools in various parts have been shut down as many teachers are taking part in the march under the auspices of trade union federation COSATU. Public servants gather for the march in Pretoria The march by public servants under the auspices of trade union federation COSATU, is yet to get underway. Members from various unions such as SADTU, POPCRU and NEHAWU are dancing and chanting liberation songs, hoisting high placards reading "We demand double digit..Away with slavery wages". The march was scheduled to commence at 9am and end by lunchtime. Talks aimed at reaching an agreement between the public servants and the employer (government) have failed to yield positive results for months now. Labour us demanding a 10 per cent wage increase as well as R1500 for housing allowance while the employer's offer stands at 5.8 per cent and R1100 for housing allowance. Thursday's march, according to COSATU leaders, will seek to get fresh mandates from unionised public servants on what the way forward should be. Conciliation efforts have also been going on this week. Buses transporting union members to the march have been trickling into the old Putco bus depot in Marabastad.
