SADTU Gauteng Media Statement on Attack on a Teacher, 13 May 2015 SADTU Gauteng condemns attack on a teacher and member inside a school SADTU Gauteng has learnt with outrage the assault of a teacher who is one of our members and the Chairperson of Eldorado Branch at school today. A group of about twenty persons entered the Goza Primary school premises, went into the Principal 's office and had a conversation with him. Thereafter, they encountered comrade Desmond Luvhengo who was in class at that time. Teaching and learning was disrupted as some teachers tried to defend their colleague and others stopped teaching out of shock. We call on the Gauteng Department of Education to investigate the forces behind this barbaric act and take drastic measures against those who shall have been found to be behind this criminal behaviour. Further, the Department must provide immediate counselling services to educators and learners. Comrade Desmond has opened a case of assault at the Eldorado police station. We urge the law enforcement authorities to bring the culprits before the might of the law. This unfortunate incident brings to bare the lack of safety in our schools which we have continuously raised with the department. Our structures shall determine how the organization should respond to this situation in the manner that the authorities take it seriously. No amount of discontentment justifies violence against others.
