The YCLSA Welcomes the Outcomes of the NUM's National Congress

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] wishes to welcome the
outcomes of the National Union of Mineworkers' National Congress held in
Johannesburg over the past few days.

Judging by the success of the Congress, it is clear that the NUM remains a
force to be reckoned with in the critical minerals sector and that its
members remain the nucleus of the organisation. It is encouraging to see
that the will of the members was expressed without any fear or favour
through internal democratic processes.

We want to take this opportunity to speak out against the misplaced
triumphalism by the sworn enemies of our revolution who see the election of
the new National Office Bearers as their victory. In reality, it is the
resolutions and policies that make an organisation and not individuals as
some would like to have us believe. One of the key resolutions to emerge out
of the National Congress is the reaffirmation of recent organisational
decisions taken by COSATU's Central Executive Committee. This is an
indication that the NUM is serious about the unity of the federation.

The NUM has a responsibility to help the workers federation COSATU navigate
its way out of troubled waters. This can only be achieved through the
preservation of one of the Federation's cardinal founding principles, "one
sector, one union, one country, one federation".

It is the members of the NUM that emerged as the real victors and we are
confident that this giant of an organisation will continue to defend and
fight for their rights in the work place.

As the YCLSA, an organisation of young people, we appreciate the fact that
the National Congress has resolved to constitutionalise the NUM's Youth
Forum. This is in recognition of the importance of organising young workers
who are equally at the receiving end of exploitative policies by employers.
We will work closely with the NUM Youth Forum and will ensure that it
reaches its strategic objectives organisationally and politically.

The YCLSA calls upon all the members of the NUM to stand behind the newly
elected national leadership structure and to ensure that the organisation is
insulated against political opportunists. Let us not be misled by the
self-defeatist triumphalism of these political opportunists who want to
divide the workers and profile themselves as their messiahs.

We hope the new leadership will abide by all the resolutions of the
congress.

Workers of the world unite!
