Morning Star.png Lesotho: Unions Warn Of Police-Army 'Civil War' The Morning Star, London, 11 June 2015 Lesotho's trade unions have warned of a "civil war" brewing between army and police factions in the southern African mountain kingdom. In a statement this week, the Congress of Lesotho Trade Unions (COLETU) blamed both the government and opposition - each of which has its loyal faction within the military, police and prison services, for the current crisis which has seen senior officers removed from their posts. Supporters of former prime minister Tom Thabane, who fled to South Africa last year, are undergoing a purge from key state positions. New Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili ordered Lesotho Mounted Police Commissioner Khothatso Tsooana to quit on June 4. Lesotho Defence Force commander Maaparankoe Mahao has received a similar order. COLETU accused the government of a smear campaign aimed at sentencing Mr Tsooana and Mr Mahao to death and of arresting ordiary soldiers and accusing them of mutiny. It also blamed Mr Thabane's ABC party for not engaging with the government on security reforms.
