New Age2.png Public sector wage deal a victory for common sense - Labour Caucus SNN, The New Age, Johannesburg, 26 June 2015 The public sector wage deal of 7%, agreed to by the unions is victory of common sense and principle, Chairperson of the Independent Labour Caucus in the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) Basil Manuel said on Friday. "It is an important victory for the unions, but it's not just about winning, it is a victory for common sense and principle. For this, strategic leadership at the highest level was required. "The principle of the matter was that the unions have agreed to government's offer for a 7%, salary increase," Basil told SNN. Basil echoed his sentiment after the unions in the public sector, mostly affiliated to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), agreed to government's offer for a 7% salary hike. "It shows a sense of good leadership in that matters should not be left to run on their own," he said. Acting Public Service and Administration Minister Nathi Mthethwa welcomed the deal. "Clauses 3.5 and 3.6 of the 2012 agreement have been removed. Accordingly the 0.6% deducted from the adjusted salaries of public servants will be paid back to public servants backdated to 1 April," Department of Public Services and Administration Spokesperson Brent Simons said. "Minister Nathi Mthethwa yesterday met with all the unions as well as government's mandate committee. It was agreed that government will pay a 7 % salary increase to the unions," Simons added. Simons said the remaining offer of 0.6% comes into effect after all processes have been followed. "We have already paid the 6.4% increase. We will now include a further 0.6% which kicks in shortly after all the finalities have been dealt with," he said. COSATU president Sdumo Dlamini welcomed the deal and urged the government to honour the agreement by paying the workers. "We are happy that we have been able to restore the agreement that was signed. COSATU and its affiliated unions played a significant role in ensuring that the agreement would be signed. Now the workers must get all their money," Dlamini said. The first year of the three year wage deal will see an increase of 7% for the workers. The second year of the deal will see an increase of CPI plus 1% and a further CPI plus 1% in the last year. As part of the deal, public servants will also receive an increase of 28.5% on their medical aid subsidy. A housing allowance for home-owners will also be allocated. Public servants not owning homes will have government pay the agreed amount on their behalf. -SNN From: http://thenewage.co.za/163251-9-53-Public_sector_wage_deal_a_victory_for_com mon_sense_Labour_Caucus -- -- You are subscribed.
