Days after giving an address at the United Nations’ Special Committee on Decolonization, where he repeatedly iterated Argentina’s claim to the South Atlantic archipelago, Timerman attacked Britain’s unilateralism regarding the issue, stressing that “there is no country that comes here to speak in favour of the United Kingdom’s rights” regarding the discussion of sovereignty. Timerman was similarly eager to reiterate Argentina’s call for dialogue backed by many members but repeatedly spurned by London. “The British should feel impotence, because if one is British and sitting here listening to the speeches, you would notice the loneliness of the UK in the case of the Malvinas,” he told newspaper Tiempo Argentino in reference to General Assembly Resolution 2065 — enjoying its 50th anniversary this year — which is officially supported by the UN Special Committee and addresses “The Question of the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands”, imploring both sides to enter negotiations over the islands’ sovereignty and administration. This latest attack on British intransigence regarding the Malvinas comes just days after Judge Lilian Herraez of Tierra del Fuego demanded the seizure of assets from the multiple US and UK oil drilling companies operating in the vicinity of the Malvinas Islands, which fall under the administrative boundaries of Tierra del Fuego according to Argentine law.
