Rift in KZN ANC worries SADTU Giordano Stolley, African News Agency, IOL, Durban, 14 September 2015 The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in KwaZulu-Natal announced on Monday that it will be backing the ruling party in next year's local government elections next year, but expressed concern over divisions within the African National Congress. At a press conference in Durban, the union's provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza said: "SADTU must run an election programme that would ensure that the ANC remains victorious." She said that during a meeting of the union's provincial executive committee (PEC) held over the weekend, concerns were expressed about internal divisions within the ruling party. "The PEC was disturbed by the political situation in the province. The PEC was disturbed by the divisions and instabilities in the regions of the ANC and believes that it cannot be the ANC that is so entrenched in factions and divisions." The ANC's largest region - the eThekwini region - has battled to hold an elective conference due to infighting among provincial and local party leaders. The elective conference has had to be postponed four times and is scheduled to be held in October. "The PEC noted the insults directed to some leaders of the Alliance and call upon the Alliance to deal with these tendencies. It cannot be correct that there are people determined to destroy the people's movement by insults, using vulgar language to the chairperson of the ANC (Senzo Mchunu), the secretary of the ANC (Sihle Zikalala), of the party." She said that the PEC had decided to ask the Congress of South African Trade Unions, of which it is a member, to request a bilateral meeting with the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.
