Mass support for COSATU protest march

Thousands thronged the streets of Johannesburg yesterday as workers
affiliated to COSATU embarked on a protest march for decent jobs,
healthcare, education and for e-tolls to be scrapped.

The nationwide protest coincided with International Day of Decent Work.
Scores of protesters assembled in Parktown, Johannesburg, and later marched
to the offices of Telkom, the office of the Gauteng premier and the SA
Chamber of Commerce and Industry to deliver memorandums of grievances and
demands for economic transformation.

COSATU president Sdumo Dlamini addressed more than 4000 marchers and
reiterated the federation's demand that e-tolls be scrapped.

Dlamini urged the speedy implementation of a minimum wage, which COSATU had
set at R8000 a month.

"The user pay system of e-tolls, scrap those things.

"We also want the national minimum wage to be legislated to protect the most
vulnerable workers," he said.

South African Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande was met with
rousing applause at Bank City as he criticised the recent spate of
retrenchments in the mining sector.

"Retrenchments are a declaration of war on decent work," he said.

ANC Gauteng secretary Hope Papo was met by throngs of protesters whom he
addressed outside the office of the premier. "The issue of e-tolls is not a
closed issue and is still on the agenda for the ANC to consider," Papo said.
