New Age2.png SADTU won't administer ANA exams Batandwa Malingo, The New Age, Johannesburg, 12 October 2015 The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has reiterated that it would not administer the Annual National Assessments (ANA) examinations scheduled for the first week of December this year. This comes as SADTU's alliance partner, the ANC, endorsed ANA for this year at its national general council at the weekend. The party noted the task team set to review the ANAs but said delegates supported that it go ahead this year. Five teacher unions led by SADTU have been calling for this year's ANA examinations to be scrapped and new remodelled assessments to be relaunched next year. The Basic Education Department announced last month the ANAs were under review but said this year's examinations would go ahead as planned. This decision has the backing of the ANC but teacher unions won't budge. "If the ANC said that, we are deeply disappointed. SADTU together with the other four teacher unions namely NAPTOSA, SAOU, PEU and NATU took a decision not to administer the ANA in its present form as it was not adding value to quality education," SADTU spokesperson Nomusa Cembi said. She said the announcement made by the department that the ANAs would be written in December came as a shock. "The announcement by the department that the ANAs would be written in December was made despite the commitment by the department and the unions that a task team consisting of all the unions and senior DBE officials would be established to develop a remodelled, systematic and diagnostic tool instead of ANA in its current form," she said. Cembi said the union had not changed its stance on the ANA but would administer a remodelled form of ANA. "Once the remodelling process is complete, the parties will engage on the time lines to launch a remodelled systematic and diagnostic tool. The remodelled ANA would not be ready for implementation by December 2015," Cembi said.
