Citizen3.png POPCRU to march over police killings More than 70 officers have been killed this year Valeska Abreu, The Citizen, Johanesburg, 20 November 2015 Police officers have started gathering in Marabastad, in the Pretoria city centre ahead of a march to the police ministry and justice department. Officers have gathered under the leadership of police union POPCRU. POPCRU march photo.jpg One of the main aims of today's march is to voice their concern with police killings and government's response. More than 70 men and woman in blue have been killed since the beginning of the year. POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo said a memorandum would be handed over to the acting national police commissioner, at the minister of police's office and at the justice ministry. "Police are not being protected, they are vulnerable and have low morale. Seeing their colleagues die in front of them is having a negative effect. A war has been waged against police and something needs to be done." Mamabolo said each memorandum listed its own grievances and demands. The march is expected to kick off just before midday. Mamabolo said off duty officers from five provinces are expected to join. Only a handful of supporters have gathered so far under the watchful eye of public order police and metro police.
