SADTU wishes COSATU a Successful 12th National Congress

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) wishes the Congress of
South African Trade Unions (COSATU) a successful national congress that
begins from Monday, 23 - 26 November 2015 at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand
under the theme, "Building Unity and Cohesion of COSATU to advance the
National Democratic Revolution".

The build-up to the Congress has been met by negativity from the prophets of
doom predicting its demise. However, the Special Congress held in July
proved them wrong as the Federation emerged stronger and more resolute in
its mandate to fight for workers. These prophets of doom, led by the
disgraced former General Secretary Vavi, will not confuse the workers. The
workers understand that COSATU is bigger than any individual and will not be
diverted by their empty rhetoric or lies being peddled in the media.

The workers know that Vavi is a fugitive from disciplinary processes for
having disrespected their office by having sex for two minutes with the
subordinate during working hours in the office. The workers know very well
that he trampled on the founding principles of COSATU by allowing NUMSA to
expand its scope with the intention of cannibalizing other affiliates.

The 12th Congress is an historic one as it will be taking place a few days
before the Federation celebrates its 30th anniversary. The Congress will,
among others, reflect on the journey travelled thus far.

It is also taking place at a time when the country is faced with a challenge
of increasing rates of unemployment and poverty in the face of illicit
financial flows from Africa as well as South Africa.

A study by Global Financial Integrity (GF) entitled 'Illicit Financial Flows
from Africa: Hidden Resource for Development' has concluded that the illicit
financial flows are growing at an average rate of 11.9 percent per year.
South Africa is among the top five countries in the continent with the
highest illicit outflows measured at $24,9billion.

The Congress will have to come up plan of action on how we can assist
towards the curbing outflows because it they are curtailed, they can produce
the largest source of new funds for poverty alleviation and economic growth
in the near future which we sorely need.

SADTU looks back at the journey travelled with pride because some of the
highlights include the formation of SADTU in 1990. COSATU was, after the
Harare Conference that brought together racially divided teacher
organisations from South Africa, given the task of convening the National
Teacher Unity Forum (NTUF) and initiated the process of building one
non-racial teacher union which led to the formation of SADTU.

We owe our being to the wonderful work COSATU did which led our formation.
SADTU goes to the congress not to attend an event but to receive instruction
from the command centre to stand together with all workers and to contribute
towards unity and the National Democratic Revolution.

We are confident that from the Congress, a more united, focussed and
resilient COSATU will emerge.
