Alliance is still relevant - Zuma

The tripartite alliance between the ANC, SA Communist Party and COSATU, is
still relevant today, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday.

"Our are separate organisations that entered into an alliance because of
historic conditions must ask ourselves whether historic conditions still
prevail today," he told COSATU's 12th National Congress in Midrand,
Johannesburg.

"If not we must define the new conditions and determine the basis and place
of our organisations and the alliance itself."

Zuma said this was important because genuine unity in the alliance could not
be achieved if it did not comprehend where it came from and if it doubted
its relevance in present day South Africa.

This comes a few weeks after former deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe said
the alliance was dead.

There have also been calls from some in the SACP for the party to consider
re-evaluating its position in the alliance.

Zuma on Monday reminded COSATU that the alliance emerged out of the struggle
and helped the country get to where it was today.

The relationship between COSATU and the ANC was like a spear and shield and
the two always had to be together.

"If you don't have one you are in trouble," he said.

"They can't part ways. Let us protect the alliance. It is unique. Only in
South Africa do we have this alliance, that's why we have had success in our
revolution."

Earlier on Monday, COSATU president Sdumo Dlamini also spoke about the
importance of the alliance.

He said COSATU wanted a strong ANC-led alliance.

"We want an ANC, SACP, [and] COSATU... which is strong and united," Dlamini
said.
